What to expect at our services

We are a lay-led congregation offering two types of Sunday services:

Traditional (1st and 3rd Sundays each month from 10-11:15 a.m.)

Simplified (2nd , 4th and 5th Sundays each month from 10-11 a.m.)

Location: We meet at the McMinnville Grange, 1700 SW Old Sheridan Road, McMinnville, Oregon.

Accessibility: The Grange has ramps leading to the upper and lower levels for those unable to use the stairs. There are two all-gender, ADA bathrooms, one with a changing table, on the upper level. There are two more all-gender bathrooms on the lower level.

Traditional Services: Upon arrival at the upper level of the Grange, you will be welcomed by a

greeter and offered a Sunday Bulletin/Order of Service. If you wish, you may receive a temporary

nametag and visit the “Welcome Table,” both located on the upper level to the right of the door. The

greeter can direct you there, and you will be helped by a UUFM member.

Please find a seat where you’ll be most comfortable (chair or the cushioned benches at the periphery

of the spacious room). Both adults and children gather together for the start of the service. The

Celebrant, which changes each Sunday, guides the congregation through the service, which routinely

includes:

  • Lighting of the chalice, the symbol of our faith

  • Musical performances and congregants singing from hymnals

  • Story for All Ages -- Early in the service, the children gather at the front for a short, meaningful story for all. Afterward, the congregation forms a “love arch” in the middle aisle, and sings “This Little Light of Mine” as the children walk underneath it on their way to Children’s Religious Exploration, held downstairs.

  • Visitors are welcomed and, if they choose, may share their names and where they live.

  • Concerns and joys. This is a moment open for anyone wishing to share something in their personal lives that is weighing on them or bringing them happiness. We’re here to support one another with personal concerns and to celebrate joys, big or small. While we recognize the many challenges in the wider world, this time is reserved for what’s personal to each of us.

  • Sermon by a guest UU minister, other guest speaker, or member of the congregation (usually lasting 20 minutes)

  • 2-minute silent reflection

  • Dialogue between congregants and speaker

  • Offertory of financial donations for UUFM and/or a local nonprofit organization (changes quarterly)

  • Chalice is extinguished while everyone says: We extinguish this flame, but not the light of truth, the warmth of community or the fire of commitment. These we carry in our hearts until we are together again.

  • Service is concluded by forming a large circle and singing the hymn, "Go Now in Peace": Go now in peace, go now in peace, may the spirit of love surround you, everywhere, everywhere, you may go.

  • After services: We invite you to stay to get acquainted with our UU community. Please visit the

“Welcome Table” to pick up UUFM materials and, if interested, sign up to receive our emailed weekly newsletter. For more opportunities to chat, you are invited to a casual gathering at Bad Dog Bakery (5 minutes from the Grange).

Simplified Services: One of the primary goals of these services is to build community. The room is arranged with chairs in a circle, and you are welcome to sit wherever you feel most comfortable. In the spirit of “simplification,” many of the elements of traditional services are intentionally set aside.

Simplified services typically include:

  • Adults gather in the upper level while children gather in the lower level for Children’s Religious

    Exploration

  • A facilitator, usually a UUFM member, presents on a topic for about 10 minutes

  • The group is divided into small groups (usually 4-5 people) to discuss related questions provided by the facilitator for around 20 minutes. All discussion is shared in a spirit of openness, acceptance, and respect.

  • The group comes back together and the facilitator asks for key takeaways from the small group

    discussions

  • Following the service, you are welcome to stay as long as you like to get acquainted -- you’ll find we’re a warm and inviting bunch! The “Welcome Table” is set up at most Simplified Service Sundays. For more opportunities to chat, you are invited to a casual gathering at Bad Dog Bakery (5 minutes from the Grange).
